Where does the name Poudre come from? The headwaters of the Cache La Poudre River are in the front range of Larimer County. It flows through the Poudre Canyon and emerges from the foothills into the city of Fort Collins, home to the SALUS Fort Collins Store. The name of the river means "hide the powder" in French. It refers to an incident from the 1820s when French trappers were caught in a snowstorm and forced to bury their gunpowder along the banks of the river.
